The Norfolk Southern Loop

The Norfolk Southern freight train will be pulled by 2 GE ES44AC Locomotives, both of which are on hold at Mountain Town Hobbies in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. I have yet to start on this loop of the grand kids layout. Its going to take me a long time to raise the money to support this phase of the development of the layout. I still need to get the 26 inch radius curved track and 10 9 inch pieces of straight track and 1 terminal piece of 9 inch streight track I am going to need. I plan to pick up the transformer I need at the Lansing train show in November.

Trying To Incorporate The CSX Dash 8's

The CSX loop will be pulled by 2 Dash 8 locomotives. They are both on hold at Mountain Town Hobbies in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. Once I have secured these I will be able to run this loop on the grand kids layout. I will slowly be adding the rolling stock to the freight train.

The Norfolk Southern Loop Is Next To Be Worked On

My attention now shifts to the development of the outer loop on my grand kids layout. this loop will use 26 inch radius curved Bachmann EZtrack. I need 4 packages of that track and 10 pieces of 9 inch straight track with one 9 inch terminal piece to complete the track layout I will pick up the transformer at the train show in Lansing Michigan this November. The locomotives are already on hold at Mountain Town Hobbies. I already have a fair amount of rolling stock needed to complete this phase of the layout. Once this is completed the grand kids layout will be complete. with the exception of landscaping and buildings. It may not sound like much but this will take a lot of time to raise the money needed to put this together.

The CSX Loop on the Grand Kids Layout

In looking over my extra track I found enough 22 inch radius track and enough straight track to use for the grand kids center loop that will be used for the CSX railway I just need the locomotives and the rolling stock to give me everything I need to complete the central loop. I got lucky

The Porch HO Layout

I have been playing with my HO layout that is out on the sun porch in the back of the house. It is the first layout I put together and still provides hours of entertainment. I am running a New York Central passenger train that displays heavyweight cars. there are 2 PA locomotives, a PB locomotive, an RPO, an Express Mail Car, a Baggage Car, 2 Coach Cars, a Lounge Car, a Diner, 2 Sleeper Cars, and 2 Observation Cars. with 3 more Sleeper Cars coming.

Another train I am running on the layout. is a Pere Marquette passenger train. they are pulled by 2 E7A locomotives, an RPO, an Express Mail Car, 3 Coach Cars, a Coach/Diner Car, a Lunchette Lounge Car, and 3 10-6 Sleeper Cars. with 2 more Coach Cars coming.

I am running an Ann Arbor Freight Train. That is pulled by 3 GP38's followed by 4 Box Cars, 2 Tank Cars, 2 3Bay Hoppers, 2 Centerflow Hoppers, 4 Covered Grain Hoppers, 4 Coal Cars, and a Caboose.

And lastly there is a Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Freight train. this train is pulled by 2 GP35's, 3 Box Cars, 6 Covered Hoppers, and 2 Gondolas.

There is still a lot more landscaping to be done on this layout, as it continues to provide hours of entertainment.

Building The Grand Kids Layout

As I put together the component parts of what will be the Grand Kids layout I find I am having a blast. The layout will consist of 3 mainline tracks.
The design is simple, as it consists of simple ovals the inner oval is a 18 inch radius which will be used to model the BNSF Railway that much is already put together in the current Grand Kids layout.
The centeral oval is a 22 inch radius oval which will be used to model CSX Transportation. I have just begun to accumulate the track and rolling stock I need to use to make it a reality.
Finally the outer oval will be a 26 inch radius oval to model the Norfolk Southern Railway I have three packs of track on hold at Mountain Town Hobbies in Mount Pleasant Michigan I only need one more pack to complete the oval. the rolling stock and locomotives have already come in.
All of the track will be Bachmann EZtrack as I find it to be good track to use that looks good as well.
Modeling these railroads allows me to go coast to coast in the contental United States

The Rolling Stock is Starting to Come In

So far 2 boxcars, both Norfolk Southern road Numbers #407001 and #407046 have arrived to add to the Norfolk Southern loop along with a Norfolk Southern 100 ton Hopper.

Another 50 foot 100 ton hopper came in for the CSX loop. It was formally a New York Central hopper that got passed down from New York Central to Conrail and then finally to CSX.
There is a debate going on in my head as to whether or not I should order some BNSF rolling stock to beef up the BNSF loop. I am leaning strongly to no.

The Norfolk Southern Locomotives Came In

The GE ES44AC Locomotives came in they are manufactured by MTH, a company I have found to produce a fine quality model train. I need to save my money so I can pay for them. They are on hold at Mountain Town Hobbies in Mount Pleasant Michigan waiting for me to collect enough pop cans. The grand kids layout is starting to come together.

Missed Opportunity

The CSX locomotives I had hoped to get were all sold out at Walthers so I opted to go with these instead.

They are GE Dash 8 40B's
The GE Dash 8-40B (or B40-8) is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems between 1988 and 1989. It is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives.
A total of 150 examples of this locomotive were built for North American railroads.
The GE Dash 8-40BW (B40-8W) is a variant fitted with a full-width cab. Another variant is the GE Dash 8-40BP, more commonly known as the Genesis series. The locomotives in the Genesis series are the P40DC, the P42DC, and the P32ACDM.

First Targeted Acquisitions for the Grand Kids Layout

The first items I am hoping to add to the grand kids layout are the cabooses.

These I found at Walthers on sale for a great price.
I now have them and they are on the layout.
The Locomotives I will have to save up for and I know that will take a lot of pop cans.
